Therapeutic Healing

Expanding the Horizons of Healing

Integrative Effective Psychological Care

At Horizon, we provide integrated effective psychological care, combining powerful therapeutic approaches to address mental health and addiction challenges comprehensively. Our treatment philosophy recognizes that healing often requires a multi-faceted approach, as different modalities can complement and enhance each other.

For example, we might integrate:

  1. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with Motivational Interviewing (MI): CBT helps reshape thought patterns and behaviors, while MI enhances motivation for change, creating a powerful synergy for sustainable recovery.

2. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) with Internal Family Systems (IFS): EMDR effectively processes traumatic memories, while IFS helps integrate these experiences within one’s broader psychological landscape, promoting deeper healing.

3. 12-Step Facilitation with CBT: The spiritual and community aspects of 12-Step programs can be reinforced by CBT’s practical tools for managing thoughts and behaviors, offering a comprehensive approach to addiction recovery.

By thoughtfully combining these evidence-based modalities, we create a treatment plan tailored to your unique needs and experiences. This integrated approach allows us to address various aspects of your well-being simultaneously, often leading to more robust and lasting improvements.
Our goal is to provide you with a diverse set of tools and insights, empowering you to navigate your journey to wellness with confidence and resilience.

Our Therapeutic Modalities

Cognitive Behavioral Thearpy

Cognitive Behavioral Thearpy

At Horizon Rehab Center, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) forms the foundation of our treatment programs. As our primary therapeutic method, CBT is integral to our evidence-based approach to addiction recovery and mental health treatment.

CBT is a powerful, scientifically-proven form of psychotherapy based on the premise that our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are interconnected. By identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviors, individuals can significantly improve their emotional state and overall well-being.

CBT is recommended for treating a variety of conditions, including:

  • Substance use disorders
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Eating disorders
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Phobias and panic disorders

Its versatility makes CBT an essential tool in addressing the diverse needs of our clients, whether they’re struggling with addiction, mental health issues, or both.

At Horizon, we don’t just apply CBT during your stay; we teach you how to use these techniques independently. Our skilled therapists will guide you in:

  • Identifying negative thought patterns
  • Challenging and reframing unhelpful beliefs
  • Developing coping strategies for difficult situations
  • Practicing mindfulness and relaxation techniques

By mastering these CBT skills, you’ll be equipped with powerful tools to maintain your mental health and overall well-being long after you leave our care. This empowerment is crucial for sustained recovery and personal growth.

Through CBT, we at Horizon are committed to providing you not just with treatment, but with a transformative approach to managing your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors for a healthier, more fulfilling life.

Motivational Interviewing:

Empowering Change from Within

At Horizon, we utilize Motivational Interviewing (MI) as a powerful tool in our treatment arsenal for mental health and addiction issues. This collaborative, goal-oriented approach to counseling is designed to strengthen an individual’s motivation and commitment to change.

What is Motivational Interviewing?

Motivational Interviewing is a client-centered counseling method that helps people resolve ambivalent feelings and insecurities to find the internal motivation they need to change their behavior. It is a practical, empathetic, and short-term process that takes into account how difficult it is to make life changes.

Benefits for Mental Health and Addiction Treatment

Motivational Interviewing is particularly effective in treating mental health and addiction issues because it:

  • Enhances internal motivation: MI helps individuals discover their own reasons for change, rather than having change imposed upon them.
  • Resolves ambivalence: It aids in working through conflicting emotions about change, a common struggle in addiction and mental health recovery.
  • Reduces defensiveness: The non-confrontational approach helps clients lower their guard and engage more openly in treatment.
  • Increases treatment engagement: By aligning treatment goals with personal values, MI improves commitment to the recovery process.
  • Promotes lasting change: Changes driven by internal motivation are often more sustainable than those driven by external pressures.

Through Motivational Interviewing, we empower our clients to become active participants in their recovery journey, fostering a sense of autonomy and self-efficacy that is crucial for long-term success in managing mental health and overcoming addiction.

EMDR: Healing Trauma

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a powerful and innovative approach in the treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), small “T” traumas and other mental health issues. Clients must be at an assessed level of “emotional stability” before receiving EMDR treatment. This doesn’t mean the absence of all distress or symptoms. Rather, it refers to a baseline level of functioning where the client can engage in therapy productively and safely. The therapist will assess this readiness before beginning EMDR and for most cases, intensive trauma work does not commence within the first 30 days of treatment.

EMDR is a psychotherapy treatment originally designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories. It’s an integrative approach that combines elements of cognitive-behavioral therapy with bilateral stimulation, typically in the form of eye movements.

During EMDR sessions, our trained therapists guide clients through eight phases:

  1. History-taking and treatment planning
  2. Preparation
  3. Assessment
  4. Desensitization
  5. Installation
  6. Body scan
  7. Closure
  8. Re-evaluation

The core of EMDR involves the client focusing on a traumatic memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation, which is believed to help the brain reprocess the memory.

  • Addresses underlying trauma: Many mental health and addiction issues are rooted in past traumatic experiences. EMDR helps process these experiences, reducing their impact.
  • Reduces emotional distress: It can significantly decrease the vividness and emotional charge of traumatic memories.
  • Improves coping mechanisms: EMDR helps develop healthier coping strategies, reducing the reliance on addictive behaviors or substances.
  • Enhances self-esteem: By resolving past traumas, clients often experience improved self-worth and confidence.
  • Offers rapid results: Many clients report significant improvements in fewer sessions compared to traditional talk therapies.
  • Reduces cravings: For those with addiction, EMDR can help reduce the intensity of cravings triggered by traumatic memories.

Through EMDR, we offer our clients a path to healing that addresses both the symptoms and the root causes of their mental health and addiction issues. This approach allows for deep, transformative change, paving the way for lasting recovery and improved quality of life.

Post InductionTherapy

Healing Childhood Trauma for Adult Recovery
Post Induction Therapy (PIT) is a powerful approach to addressing the root causes of mental health issues and addiction. This specialized therapy sometimes known as “Inner Child” therapy focuses on healing childhood trauma and its lasting effects, providing a path to deep, transformative recovery.

PIT is typically conducted in a structured, multi-step process:

  1. Identifying core issues: Recognizing patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors stemming from childhood experiences.
  2. Exploring family of origin: Examining early relationships and their impact on current functioning.
  3. Addressing carried feelings: Uncovering and processing emotions from childhood that have been suppressed or carried into adulthood.
  4. Healing the wounded inner child: Reconnecting with and nurturing the vulnerable, child-like part of oneself.
  5. Establishing healthy boundaries: Learning to set and maintain appropriate personal limits.
  6. Developing self-regulation skills: Enhancing the ability to manage emotions and impulses effectively.

Throughout the process, clients engage in experiential exercises, guided imagery, and dialogue to access and heal early wounds.

Post Induction Therapy is particularly effective in treating mental health and addiction issues because it:

  • Addresses root causes: PIT targets the underlying trauma often driving addictive behaviors and mental health symptoms.
  • Promotes emotional literacy: Clients learn to identify, express, and process complex emotions.
  • Enhances self-awareness: The therapy helps individuals understand the connection between past experiences and current challenges.
  • Improves relationships: By healing attachment wounds, PIT can lead to healthier, more fulfilling relationships.
  • Reduces shame and guilt: The approach helps reframe childhood experiences, alleviating toxic shame that often fuels addiction.
  • Develops healthy coping mechanisms: Clients learn new ways to self-soothe and manage stress without resorting to addictive behaviors.
  • Fosters self-compassion: PIT encourages a gentler, more nurturing relationship with oneself.
  • Supports long-term recovery: By addressing core issues, the therapy promotes lasting change beyond symptom management.

Through Post Induction Therapy, we offer our clients a path to healing that addresses the deep-seated origins of their mental health and addiction issues. This approach allows for profound, transformative change, going beyond symptom management to foster genuine emotional and psychological growth.

Our therapists create a safe, compassionate space for this deep work, recognizing the courage it takes to confront early trauma. We tailor the PIT process to each individual’s needs, ensuring a supportive and effective healing journey. At Horizon, we believe that by healing the wounds of the past, individuals can create a healthier, more fulfilling present and future, free from the burdens of addiction and unresolved trauma.

Cognitive Processing Therapy

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is a powerful, evidence-based treatment for individuals struggling with trauma. This structured approach helps clients process traumatic experiences and develop healthier thought patterns, leading to improved emotional well-being and quality of life.

Cognitive Processing Therapy is a specific type of cognitive behavioral therapy designed to treat posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and related conditions. CPT focuses on how the traumatic event is construed and coped with by a person who is trying to regain a sense of mastery and control in their life.

CPT typically involves 12 sessions, though this can be adjusted based on individual needs. The therapy progresses through several key phases:

  1. Education about PTSD and CPT
  2. Processing the impact of the trauma
  3. Identifying and challenging “stuck points” – troublesome thoughts related to the trauma
  4. Learning to challenge and modify unhelpful beliefs
  5. Developing more balanced, realistic perspectives

Throughout the process, clients complete written assignments to help them engage with their thoughts and emotions related to the traumatic event.

Cognitive Processing Therapy is particularly effective in treating trauma because it:

  • Addresses core beliefs: CPT helps identify and modify deeply held beliefs about the self, others, and the world that have been affected by trauma.
  • Reduces PTSD symptoms: Research shows significant reduction in symptoms such as flashbacks, nightmares, and hypervigilance.
  • Improves emotional regulation: Clients learn to manage intense emotions related to their traumatic experiences.
  • Enhances cognitive flexibility: CPT teaches skills to challenge and change rigid thought patterns.
  • Promotes post-traumatic growth: Many clients report personal growth and increased resilience as a result of therapy.
  • Offers long-lasting effects: The skills learned in CPT continue to benefit clients long after treatment ends.
  • Applicable to various traumas: CPT is effective for different types of trauma, including combat, sexual assault, and natural disasters.

Through Cognitive Processing Therapy, we offer our clients a path to healing that addresses both the emotional and cognitive impacts of trauma. This approach allows for deep, transformative change, empowering individuals to move beyond their traumatic experiences and reclaim their lives.

Our therapists work closely with each client to tailor the CPT process to their unique needs, ensuring a supportive and effective healing journey. We believe that by changing how one thinks about their trauma, it’s possible to change how they feel and behave, leading to improved overall well-being and a more fulfilling life.
