At Horizon Rehab Center, we understand the impact that addiction can have on not just the individual struggling with substance abuse, but also their loved ones. The behaviours, emotions, and thoughts of the person with addiction can have a far-reaching effect on the entire family, leading to feelings of guilt, shame, anger, and frustration. That's why we recognize the significance of incorporating family therapy as a crucial aspect of our addiction treatment program.

What is Family Therapy?

Family therapy is a type of psychotherapy that brings together other members of a client’s family to work together as a unit. The goal of family therapy is to improve communication and resolve conflicts within the family, which can help to strengthen relationships and promote healing for everyone involved. The therapist acts as a facilitator, guiding family members through the process and helping them to identify patterns of interaction that may be contributing to conflict, resentment, and other issues. By recognizing these patterns, family members can work together to change them, leading to healthier and more positive interactions within the family.

The therapist will use a variety of techniques, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, solution-focused therapy, and other evidence-based methods, to help family members improve communication, express their feelings, and work through conflicts. Additionally, family therapy can provide education and support for family members on how to best support their loved one in recovery.

At Horizon Rehab Center, we include a family therapy program as part of our addiction treatment program, led by licensed therapists who specialize in addiction and family therapy. Our program will help family members understand the nature of addiction and how it has affected their loved ones and how to support them in their recovery journey best.

Does Family Therapy Work?

For many people with addiction, family therapy can be a powerful addition to their recovery program. Research has shown that involving family members in the treatment process can improve outcomes for individuals who are currently in treatment.

Family therapy can help clients and loved ones address some of the underlying issues that may have contributed to the addiction and can help family members to provide support for the person in recovery. Family therapy also serves as an opportunity to help members repair the damage done on account of their loved one’s addictive behaviour.

One study found that family therapy, in combination with individual therapy, was associated with a higher likelihood of abstinence from substances and a lower likelihood of relapse, than individual therapy alone. For instance, family therapy can provide insight into any codependency patterns that may have enabled the individual's addiction, and work to break those patterns. Additionally, family therapy can help to improve communication and problem-solving skills within the family, which can lead to a more supportive environment for the individual in recovery.

However, it is important to note that family therapy may not be the ideal solution for every client based on their individual circumstances. At Horizon, we acknowledge that clients come from a range of backgrounds and experiences, so Family Therapy may be offered based on your personal treatment plan but is by no means a compulsory element of our treatment program.
